I had the chance to take the Excavation and Trenching course with Professor Juan Abdel-Aziz, an expert on the subject and an excellent instructor. The course was held at the FIU (Florida International University) facilities. The goal of the course was to teach us the OSHA standards for risk prevention and worker protection in excavation and trenching operations. I learned a lot from the course, both from the theory and the practice. Professor Juan Abdel-Aziz explained to us clearly and in detail the basic concepts of soil classification, the types of protection systems, the requirements for the installation and removal of the systems, the factors that affect the stability of the excavations, the methods for water and hazardous atmospheres control, and the emergency measures in case of hazards and accidents. He also showed us how to perform a proper inspection of the excavations and the protection systems, and how to identify and correct unsafe conditions. Professor Juan Abdel-Aziz has a wide experience in the field of excavation and trenching safety, and he shared with us many examples and real cases from his work. He also gave us tips and recommendations to improve our performance and avoid common mistakes. His methodology was very dynamic and participatory; He was always attentive to our questions and comments, and he gave us constructive and timely feedback. It was evident that he is passionate about the topic and that he enjoys teaching it. Thanks to the course, I was able to improve my knowledge and skills in the area of excavation and trenching safety, and apply them in my work. I am very satisfied with the course and I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to learn about this important and complex topic. I thank Professor Juan Abdel-Aziz for his dedication and his support, and I hope to take another course with him in the future.
